The results of three-year (2008-2010) studies on 74 collection samples of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) of various ecological and geographical origin in the soil and climatic conditions of the central part of Belarus by the basic grain quality parameters of malting barley are presented in the article. As a result of the conducted researches and generalization of the data, the obtained sources for yield, size, protein and extract content of grain were identified and were recommended for use as the initial material in the breeding of spring malting barley. It was established that the varieties of Philadelphia, Brovar, Ladny, Stratus and Zaziersky 85 are the sources of several characters of high brewing grain qualities at the same time. The collection barley samples had yielding capacity traits: Philadelphia; Status; Ladny; Brovar; Batka; the following ones had low protein content in barley grain: Status; Batka; Vakula; Lel; Philadelphia; Brovar; Zazersky 85; Ladny; Astoria; Pasadena; Inari. The following samples had high grain fineness indexes: Vodogaj; Sokol; Ataman; Belgorodets; Vezha; Sencis. The following ones showed high extract content indexes: Rasa; Ladny; Zazersku 85; Stratus; Philadelphia; Brovar; Barke.
