Studies on using underground water for producing cherry tomato by different systems of substrate culture

This investigation was carried out at the El-Sheikh Zowied Experimental Farm of North Sinai Research Station, Desert Research Center, Egypt in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, in unheated double span plastic house. This work was conducted to study of the influence of the growth characters, nutrient contents, yield and fruit quality of cherry tomato plants cv. Super Sweet 100 Cherry Bell, grown on different media and irrigated with underground water with different salinity levels. Cherry tomato plants were grown on five growing media (sand, date palm fiber shredded date palm leaf, coconut fiber and gravel) compared with soil culture with or without magnetite application at (5g./plant) as well as using four salinity levels (1390, 2390, 3390 and 4390 ppm) were used The results could be summarized as follows:Sand growing media improved cherry tomato vegetative growth yield, fruit quality and leaf nutrients content, than all investigated growing media Magnetite application at 5g/plant in growing media positively affected cherry tomato growth, yield, fruit quality and leaf nutrient contents when compared with non magnetite application treatments .Increasing underground irrigation water salinity from 1390 to 2390 ppm resulted in improving cherry tomato growth, yield and fruit quality, but increasing underground irrigation water salinity over than ppm led to negative effect on all measured parameters, whereas improved fruit taste and quality were improved.
