This is an interim report for a book of the same title to be published in late 2003 that is intended to be a scientific compilation of knowledge about how other species contribute to human health.The book is divided into 7 chapters, written by working groups of experts in those specific fields. These are:chapter 1 looks at the status of global biodiversity and examines the forces that threaten itchapter 2 summarizes ecosystem services that support all life, including human life, on this planetchapter 3 covers medicines and natural pesticides that are derived from plants, animals, and microbeschapter 4 traces the dependency of medical research on other specieschapter 5 examines the complex relationships among ecosystem disruption, biodiversity, and the emergence and spread of human infectious diseaseschapter 6 discusses the role of biodiversity in world food production—on land, in freshwater, and in the oceanschapter 7 provides for the policy-maker a preliminary list of suggested options to consider in addressing all of the above issues
