Maximizing conservation in Protected Areas: guidelines for gender consideration
2003
L. Aguilar
Women’s and men’s relationships with the environment in protected areas (PAs) and their buffer zones, in the context of their respective gender roles, are crucial for the very survival of these natural habitats. This brief provides information on how a gender-equitable perspective benefits conservation initiatives in protected areas.Natural resource use is often organised by gender and for PA managers to address gender is therefore helpful in managing that use and relationships with communities. The author describes steps necessary in undertaking a gender analysis and gives examples of gender sensitive indicators in PAs.
