Effect of fibrozyme and roughage type on growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing barki sheep.

Effect of replacing berseem hay (BH) with corn stalk (CS) or wheat straw (WS) supplemented with fibrolytic enzyme on performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of sheep was studied. Thirty male Barki lambs (8 months age, 29 kg b. wt.) were randomly divided into three groups of 10 each. Lambs were fed rations containing 70; concentrate and 30; of either BH, CS or WS. A fibrolytic exogenous enzyme (Fibrozyme®), 2 g/h/day, was added to the ration of animals fed CS or WS. At the end of 10 wks experimental period, three animals from each group were slaughtered to examine carcass characteristics and meat quality. There was no difference efficiency ratio in average daily body weight gain and feed among the groups. Also, there was no effect on carcass characteristics and the meat physical parameters (water holding capacity, cooking loss percentage and pH). Sheep fed WS supplemented with enzyme had higher (P0.05) eye muscle area than those fed CS and control rations. It could be concluded that fibrolytic enzyme supplementation @ 2g/h/d to CS or WS resulted in comparable sheep performance to those fed berseem hay in rations containing 70; concentrate mixture and 30; of either corn stalks or wheat straw.
