Socioeconomic consequences of climate change in Sub-equatorial Africa related to the agricultural sector

This paper addresses the impact of climate changes on agriculture in sub-equatorial Africa. It states that future climate change in Africa may lead to a warming which may be larger than the global average. Agriculture is a key economic sector in the region that could be significantly affected by changes in water resources related to climate change. Furthermore, due to the importance of agriculture in African countries these changes may have widespread socioeconomic consequences. <br /><br />The documents presents the following findings: local groups that depend primarily on natural resources for their livelihoods are vulnerable to climate change, since their resources are already stressed by other factors effective adaptation to climate variability and change is hampered by a variety of factors, such as uncertainties in regional climate projections, and a low level of awareness among decision-makers limited national capacities in climate monitoring and forecasting, and lack of co-ordination in the formulation of responses are also among the hampering factors migration has been a traditional adaptation option in the case of drought, but other solutions have been water harvesting, water conservation and storage, planting of drought-resistant and early maturing crops. The document recommends that: it is important to improve and spatially refine the projections of the climate change within the region when solutions are to be studies, not only the simple measures of climate change, such as mean temperature and precipitation, must be considered, but also weather related data should be investigated.<br />
