This special project that has been recommended by Agricultural Crops Insurance Fund based on Research Contract no. 51/882/55110/5808 dated 5th Jan 2010, has been carried out in Date palm and Tropical Fruits Research Institute of Iran. The project consists of three main parts including i) date palm cultivars identification ii) yield potential determination and iii) loss assessment. Finally a booklet was published for each part. Cultivars identification has been done based on three basses containing date palm grower declarations, cultivars distribution map/table and, comparison of date palm using identification keys of different characteristics such as thorn number, leaflet number, leaf blade width, leaf stalk length, leaf blade length, middle leaflet length, middle leaflet width, petiole thornless region length, thorn length and thorny portion of leaf stalk length from 20 date trees of each of 10 cultivars. Variance of data was analyzed by use of SPSS16 software and data has been grouped using Multirange Duncan's Test. Analyzed and grouped data and their cv showed that individual characteristics are not suitable criterion for cultivars separation. Therefore, date palm characters ratios were applied as new factors and 15 new factors were calculated and data analysis was done again. New results showed that characters like leaf blade length to leaf blade width and leaf blade length to leaf stalk length can be used as cultivar separators. For cultivar yield potential determination some trees of each cultivar were chosen from each region and traits like tree height, leaf number, trunk diameter and yield of each palm were measured. In this case, at first data uniform distribution was tested. Then, parameters correlation and of them that have significant effects on yield were distinguished. At the third step, manner of relation among parameters that have significant correlation was assessed and the equation with highest correlation coefficient for each parameter was determined. For loss assessment, after determination of important harmful factors, natural loss was calculated by using of DG=Dr-DM equation. In this equation DG means natural loss, Dr means total loss and DM means management loss.
