Serological surveillance of rinderpest in South Korea from 2005 to 2009

Rinderpest(RP) is a highly acute contagious disease of ruminants caused by a virus belonging to the Morbillivirus genus in the family Paramyxoviridae. Clinical signs include pyrexia, serous ocular and nasal discharge, progressive development of necrotic stomatitis, gastroenteritis, and death in ruminants. Recognition of freedom from RP by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) is important to major livestock producing countries as it allows access to lucrative foreign markets. To provide sufficient evidence that the country is free from RP, it is necessary to demonstrate that effective level of surveillance is being performed. In this study, we conducted a statistically designed serological surveillance from 2005 to 2009 to demonstrate freedom from RP in South Korea. For the surveillance for RP, the required annual sample size was 1,496 cattle from 374 farms, with four samples being collected from each farm. All samples were tested by ELISA and for positive samples were retested by virus neutralization test. All tested sera were concluded to be negative for RP and no evidence of antibodies against RP virus could be detected. The results support the view that South Korea is free from RP.
