Early detection of foodborne pathogens in the food chain is an important requirement for the further safe food production process. EU-Regulation No. 853/2004 defines a minimum of nine criteria for the socalled food chain information for the pork production chain. One of them is the demand for taking into consideration serological laboratory results. So far, except for various Salmonella monitoring programs in some countries, there is no systematic serological monitoring for any other pathogen occurring in pig herds.
