Determination of the optimum dose range of irradiation for mutation induction in two cotton (gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties grown in the Sudan

Two local cotton varieties, Barac (67) B and Shambat B, belonging to Gossypium hirsutum, were treated with gamma irradiation using 0, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 GY from 60Co source. The experiments were conducted at the Gezira Research Station for three consecutive seasons (1993-96) to determine the optimal dose range of gamma irradiation necessary for mutation induction. Irradiation of seeds was carried at the laboratories of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Seibersdorf, Austria. In addition to effect on germination percentage and survival rate, effects on important yield components such as seed cotton weight, lint weight, cotton seed weight and the number of bolls per plant, were evaluated besides other important growth parameters. Most of the plant traits studied decreased with increasing the dose of gamma irradiation, especially the germination percentage, survival rate and number of bolls per plant. From the results of this study, the optimal dose range of gamma irradiation necessary for mutation induction was in the range of 100 _ 250 and 150 _ 250 GY, for Barac (67) B and Shambat B, respectively. The extreme doses of gamma irradiation used ( 250 GY) showed drastic negative effects on most of the plant traits studied
