New high yielding yellow maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids suitable for irrigated sector and central rain lands of the Sudan

Four maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids (PAN6966, PAN6026, PAN6568 and PAN6616) introduced by PANNAR Seed Company of the Republic of South Africa were evaluated under irrigation at Gezira Research Farm (GRF) during 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 and under rain fed conditions at Damazin Research Farm (DRF) during 2004 and 2005 against the check PAN-6480. The trial was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3-4 replications. The plot size was 43.2square m and nitrogen was applied at planting as urea at 80 kg N/ha. Other cultural practices were kept as recommended and data were recorded for plant population, days to 50% tasseling and silking, plant and ear heights, 100 kernels weight and grain yield (t/ha). The analysis was carried by IRRISTAT statistical package on separate season in each site, whereas the combined analysis was done at GRF only for the four seasons. Results of days to tasseling for the combined analysis were comparable for all hybrids; however, PAN- 6026 and PAN-6568 silked significantly earlier than the other hybrids and attained 50% silking at 59 and 58 days, respectively. PAN-6026 showed significantly shorter plants and lower ear placement (177 and 71 cm) compared to other hybrids. The grain yield of PAN-6568 (4.55 t/ha) and PAN-6966 (4.41 t/ha) were significantly higher than the check PAN-6480 (3.70), with grain yield increase of 23 and 19%, respectively. The results of grain yield and yield stability analysis showed that the three promising hybrids (PAN-6966, PAN-6026 and PAN-66568) were leading in mean grain yield and their bi values and deviation from regression were stable. The lower value of deviation from regression of PAN-6026 showed its suitability to rain fed conditions, while the other two hybrids PAN-6966 and PAN-6568 were adaptable and high yielding under irrigated sector of the Sudan
