Forage and seed yields of winter sown lubia (Lablab purpureus L.) and field peas (Pisum sativum L.) in the Gezira, Sudan

An experiment was raised for two winter seasons (2004/05) and (2005/06) at the Gezira Research Farm, Wad Medani, Sudan, with the objective to study the comparative performance of lubia (Lablab purpureus L.) and field peas (Pisum sativum L.). It was sown to four sowing dates; the first and mid of both November and December. Treatments were arranged in split plot design with three replications; sowing dates were assigned to main plots and crops to subplots. Data were taken on phenology, plant height, dry forage yields, seed and straw yields. The results showed that the forage yield of lubia in all sowing dates in 2005/06 and in three sowing dates in 2004/05 were higher than those for the field peas. Likewise, the seed yield of lubia in the first three sowing dates of both seasons surpassed those of field peas. The highest dry matter yields of both crops were obtained when sown on the first of November in 2004/05, and mid of November in 2005/06, while the highest seed yields of both crops in both seasons were obtained when sown on the first of November. It was concluded that winter sown lubia is a better choice than field peas in the Gezira and sowing on either the first or mid of November was optimum for forage production of both crops. November first, on the other hand, was optimum for seed production of both crops
