Genotypic performance and traits association in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Fourteen rice genotypes were grown at the Gezira Research Station Farm, Wad Medani. Sudan, for two rainy seasons (2002 and 2004) in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. They were assessed for genotypic and phenotypic variability, heritability in broad sense, genetic advance, and correlations of all possible combinations of yield and yield components and path analysis for 11 characters. A wide gene¬tic variability was observed among the genotypes for most of the char¬acters studied. High genotypic coefficient of variation and genetic advance were recorded for grain yield/ha, percent of unfilled grains/ panicle, number of grains/ panicle and number of filled grains/ panicle and low for number of tillers/plant, in both seasons. Relatively high heritability estimates ( 70%) in both seasons, were estimated for plant height. days to 50% flowering. days to 50% maturity. number of grains per panicle. percent of unfilled grains per panicle and 1000-seed weight. Highest per¬cent of heritability estimate combined with the highest genetic advance as percentage of the mean was shown by number of grains/panicle in the second season. The highest yielding genotypes were RPCB 2B-849 (IET 1444) and WAB I81-18. Their grain yields were 2.8 and 2.7 t/ha, averag¬ed over the two seasons, respectively. The highest, positive and signifi¬cant association with grain yield was shown by number of filled grains per panicle followed by number of panicles per square metre. The path analysis also confirmed the fact that number of filled grains/ panicle and number of panicles/m2 were the most important characters related to grain yield. The greatest direct effect on grain yield was exerted by number of filled grains/panicle. These characters could be used as selection criteria for rice improvement
