The physical properties and soil organic matter of the Haplic Chernozems vineyards of the South Slovakia vine growing area were evaluated. The soil samples were taken from two selected localities (1st Dúlovce, 2nd Dvory nad Žitavou). Before sampling, in each locality in the productive vineyards two pits were dug (1st in rows of the vine, 2nd between the rows of vine). The obtained results showed that the soil management practices significantly affect the physical properties and organic matter content of the Haplic Chernozems. In comparison between the rows of vine, better and more favourable physical properties (bulk density, total porosity, non-capillary pores) were observed in the rows of vine. On the other hand, in rows of vine, the soil organic matter content was lower than in between the rows of vine. The content of soil organic matter content is very important, particularly if values of bulk density are very high (above critical level). It can lead to a decrease of the other physical properties of soil. It is therefore very important to give attention to the quantity and quality of organic matter in productive vineyards.
