National Laboratory Animal Center, Mahidol University endeavors to maintain the outbred Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats in order to serve the need of the laboratory animals for the research, testing, and academic purposes in Thailand. To assure the quality of our laboratory animals, health monitoring system is required. Clinical Chemistry is one of profiles which used for health monitoring. Total 214 serums from both stocks including male and female of 4 and 10 weeks old were used to study. Bloods samples were collected by cardiac puncture. Thirteen chemical parameters including Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Albumin (ALB), Glucose (GLU), Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Creatinine (CREA), Uric acid (UA), Cholesterol (CHOL), Total bilirubin (Bili-T), Total protein (TP), Globulin (GLOB) and Triglyceride (TG) were determined by using blood chemistry automation. Several chemical parameters were significantly different for comparison between strains, sexes and ages of those samples (p LT 0.05). Few parameters were different from previous reference reported by our center such as CREA and UA. It might be the effect of environments such as dietary and husbandry conditions. Therefore, updated reference value is important for health monitoring and using as basic information for research. Other laboratory animals should be evaluated reference blood chemistry to use in National Laboratory Animal Center and complete the health monitoring process.
