Effects of inbreeding on agronomic traits of Thai cassava cultivars

Study for inbreeding of Thai cassava cultivars was conducted for further inbred line development and screening for the recessive traits, especially amylose-free starch (waxy starch). Inbreeding depression (ID) of F1 progenies was measured as percentage reduction from parental average in agronomic traits such as germination (G), plant height (PlHt), fresh root weight (FRtWt), total plant weight (TPlWt), harvest index (HI), root starch content (SC) and dry matter content (DMC). ID was higher with F at 0.5 than 0.25 in every traits, except G. When F was 0.5, ID was highest on FRtWt at 55.7 percent follow by TPlWt, G, PlHt, HI, SC and DMC which were 51.1, 26.4, 21.3, 13.5, 12.7 and 7.5 percent, respectively. At 0.25 of F level, the ID of FRtWt, TPlWt, G, PlHt, HI, SC and DMC were 37.5, 32.5, 30.7, 14.2, 9.0, 9.3 and 4.5 percent, respectively. While, no significant difference between the midparent and population mean of progenies with 0 of F level. There was different in ID between crosses indicated that parents selection for inbred line development were important. For the screening to waxy starch trait in 2,412 lines from with and without of inbreeding by KI tested were not found.
