Effect of reducing stocking density on increasing growth rate of red tail mystus (Macrones wyckioides Fang and Chaux, 1949) in farm scale

Red tail Mystus (Macrones wyckioides Fang and Chaux, 1949) is an economical fish and native to Thailand. In Chainat Province, the farmers usually grow this fish in cages with high stocking density of 40 fish/square m which is higher than a recommend stocking rate at 16 fish/square m and low growth rate is generally observed at a high stocking density. In the present study, the experiment was redesigned to decrease number of fish in order to improve growth and/or survival rate. Experimental fish were raised in two stocking densities (20 and 40 fish/square m) by randomized complete block design at 3 different farms. At the end of the trial (14.5 months), fish raised at 20 fish/square m exhibited significantly lower survival rate than that of 40 fish/square m with 43.00+-10.61 percent and 47.50+-2.12 percent , respectively. However, no significant difference of growth rate was found between test groups. This study strongly supported that reducing in stocking density from 40 to 20 fish/square m could not increase survival and growth rates of red tail Mystus in cage culture system.
