Efficacy of Bacillus pumilus AQBS01 on immune responses and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus agalactiae in nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Efficacy of a Bacillus pumilus AQBS01 on immune system and antibacterial activity of Nile tilapia was carried out. Viable form of this bacterium was supplemented at 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 g/kg diet and fed on Nile tilapia (50 gram body weight) for 4 weeks. The non-specific immune responses of fish were determined. The results showed that fish fed with 1.0-5.0 g of B. pumilus AQBS01 expressed significant higher of phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, phagocytic efficiency and superoxide anion (O2-) levels than that of control. The challenging experimental fish by intraperitoneal injection and orally-infected route of viable S. agalactiae exhibited high performance of B. pumilus AQBS01 application against this pathogenic bacterium. After oral and intraperitoneal injection with S. agalactiae the mortality was found to be decreased dramatically in fish group fed on diet supplemented with B. pumilus AQBS01 at concentration of 1.0-5.0 g/kg diet (P LT 0.05). However, growth rate (body weight and total length) among fish groups were not significantly different (P LT 0.05).
