Study on distribution, Frequency and Identification of hard ticks of domestic ruminants in Isfahan province, Iran

Ticks are the most important external parasite which cause heavy economic losses to livestock and transmit viral, ricketsial, bacterial and protozoal disease. In this survey the prevalence, distribution, frequency and species of ticks were studied and correlated with climatic factors from Jan.2004 to March 2006 in two different ecological zones (mountain zone and plain zone) in Isfahan province ofIran. In two zone sampling in tree traditional sheep-fold unite and 3 traditional Cow-pen unite was done. Tick collections as made from each site twice a month during spring and summer and once a month during fall and winter. At each site collection was made from 10% of available domestic animals . Tick were collected from all parts of body, each specimen was given field number and stored in a vial containing 70% ethyl alcohol. Labeling for all specimens included location, host, data and method of collection. Environmental data including relative humidity and temperature were also recorded. During the study a total of 1109 tick were collected from cattle sheep and goats from two zones. The ticks were identified (Five species belonging to 3 genera.) as follows: Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum (45.8%), Rhipicephalus sanguinus (33.1%), Hyalomma marginatum marginatum (20.83%), Rhipicephalus bursa (2%) and Boophilus annulatus (0.07%). In the mountain zone and plain zone R. sanguinus (53.39%) and H ana. ana (53.9%) were the dominant species of tick respectively. The results show that the most infestion animal body was ear, under the tail, between the leg and udder respectively. There was a notable relationship between mean temperature and tick population change and no significant correlation could be made between population change and other climatic factors. In the present study high density of ticks were collected in month May, June and July when the mean temperature was between 20-30°C and relative humidity was between 17-43% Key words: hard ticks, distribution, Frequency, Identification, domestic ruminants, Isfahan province
