Selenium content in mas cotek (Ficus deltoidea) as affected by soil acidity and phosphorus fertilization

Glasshouse experiment was carried out to investigate the selenium content in Mas cotek(Ficus deltoidea) at various selenium additions in limed and unlimed soils treated with phosphorus fertilizer. There were two levels of lime (0 & 2 t/ha of CaC03), two levels of phosphorus (0 & 100 kg of pp/ha) and five levels of selenium (0, 10, 20, 40 & 50 g of Se/ha) in a completely randomized factorial design with four replicates. During transplanting, selenium was added as sodium selenite and was applied in solution to the soil. After four months, the plants were harvested for selenium analyses. Plant tissues samples were ash dry and selenium was determined using the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. From this study, there was significant difference in selenium content between limed and unlimed soils. Selenium content was the highest in plants grown in limed compared to the unlimed soil. There was also significant difference in selenium content from phosphorus fertilizer addition with progressive increase in selenium content with addition of phosphorus fertilizer. In addition, selenium content in F. deltoidea also significantly increased with increasing rates of selenite application, and the highest selenium content was recorded in limed soils with addition of phosphorus fertilizer at 50g Se/ha.
