Comparison of economic traits and carcass quality of three commercial broiler hybrids

The performance characteristics of three commercial broiler strains (Arian, Ross and ArborAcres) were evaluated in the present study. Six hundred day-old male and female chicks allotted randomly into 24 floor pens (12 pens per sex, 25 birds per pen). Feed and water were provided ad libitum through out the experiment. At the end of each predefined growth peroids (starter, grower and finisher), chicks were weighted and pen feed intake measeured. The chickens were slaughtered at 49 days of age and the carcass guality was determined. Results showed no significant difference in body weight across strains. Effect of genetype on feed conversion ratio were significant at all peroids (P0.05). Relative weight of breast meat, thigh and abdominal fat were affected by strain and sex (P0.05). pH and water holding capacity of meat were not affected by strain and sex. In general, the production index for AborAcres and Ross chicks were higher than Arian chicks (P0.05).
