Artemisia annua L. is the main source of artemisinin which is the most efficient anti-malarial drug against the multi-drug resistant strains of Plasmodium. Due to the environmental and economical factor, in vitro cell suspension culture technique was reported as one of the most efficient method for mass production of this compound. Selection of the starting material is important for establishment of cell suspension culture. Cell lines were produced from in vitro leaf explants of three A. annua clones (TCl, TC2 and Hi) which germinated from the seeds collected from two different geographical locations in Vietnam. The growth index of the cell lines were recorded every four weeks by sub-culturing 0.5g of the callus into fresh medium for 13 subculture cycles. The cell lines were categorized into fast, intermediate and slow growing groups based on the growth index of the callus. The cell lines with consistence growth index were selected for the initiation of cell suspension culture of A. annua.
