Financial returns on planted forests in Malaysia

Plantation forestry will have an important parts to play in ensuring that sustainable forest management consist are acvieved in Malaysia, as planted forests can provide a realistic alternative to substitute some of the harvest of natural hard wood tropical forests harvest. This paper reviews the current context of forestry in Sarawak and assesess the impact of a range of issues on planted forest. The emphasis of the paper is on the financial performance of some selected industrial wood grade and high quality/utility timber species. Their performance is also compared to traditional agriculture crops which pose a competitive threat in terms of land allocation for forest plantations. A brief review of the impact financial incentives is also included in the paper, with an assestment of incentives on the development of forest plantations in New Zealand and Chile. The implications for Malaysia and possible mechanism for consideration are also identified.
