Design of an environmental-friendly solar water pumping system using the stirling engine

This paper presents the design on a water pumping system using the Stirling engine. The system will be powered by solar energy from a thermosyphon solar collector with integrated storage system, where it is environmental-friendly with no polluted emissions and can be operated in remote areas. In order to efficiently convert the solar energy to mechanical work needed for the pumping mechanism, a design of the system is proposed which will operate under temperature the difference of 60 degree centigrade. It consists of the double-acting four-cylinder Siemens engine, which is linked to a displacement pump having a total head of 10 m at a flow rate of 12 m superscript/day, a 2 x1 m solar water heater with integrated storage system, and an electrical motor for battery recharging. Most of the parts will be manufactured from glass fibre-reinforced polyester, as it will lead to ligher parts thus reducing intertia during the engine start-up. This study shows that the design is feasible, as the resulting West number is 0.28, which is close to the nominal value 0.25.
