Selection index for growth traits in purebred swine

Growth performance test records comprised of average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and backfat thickness (BF) of largewhite (LW), landrace(LR), duroc(D) and yorkshire(Y) boar lines were used in this study. Genetic parameters and breeding values were calculated from variance components derived by REML. The economic weights were derived from profit functions using regression method. Selection indices for four separate boar lines were constructed and presented as I = 1.1892ADG - 0.1281FCR + 0.0011BF for large white, I = 1.1573ADG - 0.0670FCR + 0.0033BF for landrace, I = 1.0990ADG - 0.0738FCR + 0.0008BF for duroc, and I = 1.565ADG - 0.0305FCR + 0.0195BF for Yorkshire.
