The use of automation systems in the water industry is not a new idea or trend. In fact, some of the very first such systems in the country were installed during the mid-Nineteen Eighties, at the time when the fastest computers were powered by 387 Microprocessor. Over the last two decades, there has been a definite shift towards the use of modern control technologies in the water industry in Malaysia. In the early Eighties, it was still common to find control through use of knobs, meters and buttons directly connected to the individual equipment. However, with the introduction of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), the shift towards using PLC control systems began to effectively take place. The intention of this paper is to highlight the Automation System of Sungai Selangor Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant (SSP2 WTP) which utilises a fully computerised based network scanning telemetry system, a system considered modern and highly advanced with standard comparable to those available in anya western country. Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd (PNHB) has emnbarked into plant automation since the water treatment plant inception in 1998. The paper shall highlight the Automation philosophy deployed, the advantages and our experience in operating the Sungai Selangor Water treatment plant.
