Digestibility and nitrogen retention of diets containing different levels of fiber in local (Mong Cai), F1 (Mong Chai x Large White) and exotic (Large White) fattening pigs in Vietnam

Total tract digestibility and nitrogen retention of three diets containing different levels of fiber (200, 260 and 320 g Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) kg-1 DM) were determined in three breeds of growing pig: Mong Cai (MC), Large White (LW) and F1 (MC x LW). The experiment consisted of three 3 x 3 Latin Squares with three pigs of each breed at an initial age of about 3.5 months. The fibrous ingredients were rice bran, cassava residue meal and non de-hulled groundnut meal. Digestibility of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), NDF and crude fiber (CF), and nitrogen retention (NR) and utilization (NU), decreased as level of dietary fiber increased (P<0.001). Digestibility of OM and nutrients was highest for MC and lowest for LW (P<0.001) with intermediate values for the F1. NR and NU were significantly higher (P<0.001) for LW than for MC and F1 pigs.
