Assessing the biophysical characteristics of mining-affected rivers in Nueva Vizcaya [Philippines]

Findings revealed that mercury (Hg) was present in both water and sediment samples. River water from Camagat, Surong, Dinauyan, and Didipio Rivers had an Hg concentration level of 0.0002 mg/L while result of sediment analysis was 0.07 mg/kg at dry weight. Likewise, the wastewater samples acquired from Dinkidi Hill had an Hg level of 0.0002 mg/L. On the other hand, the analysis of the sludge from the ball mill showed a dry weight of 0.3 mg/kg. At a water pH range of 4-9, mercury can react with sulfide to form mercuric sulfide which is virtually not soluble to water. The mercuric sulfide may be retained on sediments and riverbeds. Interestingly, the resulting pH of the four major river systems ranged from 6.9 to 7.6, which indicated that it was very possible to undergo reaction with the normal sulfide concentration in surface waters.
