Effects of storage length and drying duration on moisture content, germination and microflora of Tulibas mabolo [Micromellum inodorum (Blanco) Tan] seeds

The effect of drying at room temperature and storage duration on moisture content, germination and microflora of Tulibas mabolo was studied. In addition, the morphological characteristics of fruits and seeds were described. Seeds air-dried for one hour had an initial moisture content of 53.77% and seed count was 6,000/kg. First germination commenced three days after souring and 100% germination was observed after five days. Percent moisture content and germination were significantly affected by drying length and seed storage at room temperature. As percent moisture content was reduced from 53.77 to 14.82%, germination likewise was reduced to 14% and to only 0.8% after the 28th day. The critical moisture content for the species was determined to be at 39.59%. Percent infection and identification of storage and seed borne fungi were also determined after the 28th day of drying and seed storage. Based on the results, the study concludes that Tulibas mabolo belongs to the recalcitrant group of storage physiology.
