Some reproductive parameters and induced spawning in ayungin, Leiopotherapon plumbeus (Kner), using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and pituitary gland extract of janitor fish, Hypostomus plecostomus (Linn.)

Leiopotherapon plumbeus (Kner), locally known as ayungin is listed as highly threatened endemic fish species in Laguna de Bay [Philippines]. Efforts toward conservation of this fish species was initiated by studying some of the reproductive parameters and induced spawning. Reproductive parameters of female L. plumbeus were evaluated using freshly caught individuals. Induced spawning was done using human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) and pituitary gland extract (PGE) of janitor fish, Hypostomus plecostomus (Linn.). It was found that L. plumbeus is an iteroparous species. It was also found that this species is an asynchronous batch spawner as evidenced by the oocytes present in the ovary of the samples. It was established that L. plumbeus was induced to spawn using hCG. PGE of H. plecostomus, on the other hand causes display of spawning behavior in male L. plumbeus although it did not cause induced spawning. Further studies should be done with different dosages and strict observation on the temperature regulation.
