Management of two-line hybrids: the Isabela [Philippines] experience
2013
Amar, G.B. | Ramos, F.M.
The success of growing hybrids relies on good management from seeding to harvesting and postharvest operations. This study was conducted in 2012 dry and wet seasons to develop management techniques on the handling of seed production of the Thermosensitive-Genic Male Sterile (TGMS) hybrid; Mestiso 20 (NSIC Rc204H) in Isabela. The results showed that the high yield of S line was identified at treatments applied with high nitrogen rate of 150 kg N/ha. This was comparable with the yield obtained from the farmer's fertilizer rate of 120 kg N. The various rates on P and K did not affect much the yield of S line. The row ratio experiment showed the highest yield at 8:2, followed by 10:2 and 12:2 S and P line. Beyond the 12 rows of S, the yield already decreased at 15:2 and 20:2. Self pollination was observed during the wet and dry seasons that could be attributed to some factors: 1) the cold nights and frequent rains during the panicle initiation stage, and 2) the S line used was produced on-station that affected sterility of the S line when planted in the same location.
