Effect of BioN on different rice varieties under controlled condition

Biofertilizers are becoming popular for its beneficial effect on rice growth and promotes soil fertility. BioN is one of the biofertilizers that has been commercialized in the Philippines. Hence, this contains Azospirillum lipoferum and Azospirillum brasilense responsible on obtaining atmospheric nitrogen to convert into organic form for plants' utilization. The continuous land usage for rice production exhausts and depletes the nutrients in the soil. BioN application mitigates such serious agricultural problem and elevates yield for rice without any ecological sacrifice. The experiment was carried out during dry season of 2011 at International Rice Research Inst. Cooked and uncooked BioN were the two treatments and used 20 rice varieties with three replications that were transplanted into pots with sterilized upland soil. The roots of 18 days old seedlings were submerged in BioN solution for 30 minutes to 1 hour before transplanted. This study mainly aimed to test the effect of BioN specifically to determine the influence of soil micro organism present for mediating agronomic traits such as plant height, tiller number, leaf color chart (LCC) and SPAD translated to increment yield and to evaluate genotypic variations delineating positive responses from BioN. Results showed that those with higher plant height, tillers, score in LCC and value on SPAD do not show any link for a higher yield relative from cooked BioN. Positive responses were observed from PSB Rc18, PSB Rc82, Sahod Ulan 1, Swarna Sub 1, Mudgo and Santhi Sufaid with significantly higher grain yield from uncooked than cooked BioN treatment with more than 6 ton/ha. Therefore BioN improves plant growth at different stages but not necessarily increase grain yield. Moreover, BioN substantially increase grain yield in some rice varieties. Root organs play an important role contributing to grain yield which may also be added for future works in testing BioN.
