Accelerating the uptake of improved fertilizer management for rice through ICT with irrigator associations serviced by the National Irrigation Administration

Collaborative field research in the Philippines has lead to the development of site-specific nutrient management (SSNM), which provided the scientific basis for the development of Nutrient Manager for Rice. Nutrient Manager is now available for use in the Philippines through web application, interactive voice response application with mobile phones, and an android application using a Smartphone. These applications have been promoted and used among irrigator associations serviced by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). Initial findings suggests that as much as two or three sacks of inorganic fertilizer can be saved when a Nutrient Manager for Rice fertilizer recommendation is used as compared with existing fertilizer practice of farmers. The financial benefits to rice farmers are greater when Nutrient Manager is used. Existing yields of farmers are increased through improved timing of nitrogen fertilizer and balanced use of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Nutrient Manager quickly enables farmers to obtain and use a science-based, best managememnt nutrient guideline tailored to their specific field and season, irrigator associations are helping to stimulate the uptake of this new ICT based technology by farmers.
