Determination of agricultural mechanization level in the production-post production systems of rice and corn in selected region of the Philippines

In the 1970s until the 1990s, RNAM [Regional Network for Agricultural Machinery] utilized the computation of hp/ha as the major indicator of a country's progression into a mechanized system. To date, there is a consensus that the country has progressed in the level of agricultural mechanization as the government adopted several means to modernize agriculture. The lack of updated and concrete information on the levels of mechanization, however, has been a constraint for effective program planning and policy formulation not only by the government but all the concerned stakeholders in the pursuit of agricultural mechanization and productivity. The PhilMech [Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines] in collaboration with AMDP, IAE [Institute of Agricultural Engineering], CEAT [College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology], UPLB conducted the project on the: 'Determination of Agricultural Mechanization Level in the Production-Postproduction Systems of Rice and Corn in Selected Regions of the Philippines'. The general objective of the project was to determine the important mechanization components and to update the level of mechanization in the production and post production of rice and corn in selected regions of the country. Specifically, the project determined and analyze the level of agricultural mechanization in terms of hp/ha for rice and corn production and post production systems, determined and analyzed ownership and utilization of agricultural machines in rice and corn production and post production systems; conducted cost and return analysis of rice and corn production system and determined and analyzed the machinery requirement for the different levels of agricultural mechanization; determined gaps in the production and post production operations of rice and corn where mechanized technology can be adopted; determined the volume of mechanized technology needed to reach a target level of mechanization, and provided policy recommendations to improve the adoption/utilization of agricultural mechanization. The project also envisioned to produce and disseminate updated provincial mechanization profiles for rice and corn.
