Genetic diversity of peanut (Arachis hypogea L.) accessions from the National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory

Comprehensive characterization and evaluation of the diversity of peanut germplasm conserved at the National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory (NPGRL) are essential for multiple uses by different clienteles like breeders, farmers, students and other interested parties under changing climatic conditions. Sixty-one accessions of peanut from NPGRL genebank were regenerated in the experimental field of the Crop Science Cluster-Institute of Plant Breeding. Morphological characterization of these accessions was carried using a modified descriptors of Biodiversity International. Yield and yield components were also obtained. Likewise, pest and disease evaluation were conducted. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using the Shannon-Weaver (H') measure of diversity. Medium diversity was observed in number of seeds per pod while high density was noted in a selected characters like plant growth habit, branching pattern, stem hairiness, side branch growth habit, plant branching, flowering pattern on main stem, pod constriction, pod texture of surface and kernel size. Seed characterization and data encoding are still on-going. For disease evaluation, 3 accessions (PHL no. 33, 99 and 73) showed susceptible reactions to Peanut Stripe Virus (PSTV) and Peanut Mottle Virus (PMV). Two accessions (PHL no. 89 and 99) were identified by plant breeders to be promising based on vigor of plants. Analysis for nutraceutical properties like phytic acid, beta-carotene starch as well as proximate analysis of the selected accessions is underway.
