Grain quality profile of check varieties planted under direct seeded and transplanted methods

Direct seeded (DSR) and transplanted (TPR) rice entered in the National Cooperative Testing (NCT) Project were simultaneously evaluated for grain quality. To verify if there are differences in grain quality characteristics of samples under the two planting methods and possibly save on resources, rice varietal checks were evaluated. Medium-maturing and late-maturing varietal checks of irrigated lowland, namely PSB Rc18, PSB Rc82, NSIC Rc122, and NSIC RC138 were used. These were planted in PhilRice-Central Experiment Station and UPLB [Philippines Univ. Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines] from 2008 dry to 2011 wet season. TPR samples were established using the wetbed-type seedbed while DSR were broadcasted using the 40 kg/ha seed rate. Highest milling recovery was observed in medium-maturing check and DSR-planted, NSIC Rc138. Amylose content of all check varieties evaluated was intermediate (19.0-22.3%), gelatinization temperature was low to intermediate, while the Instron values ranged from 1.5 to 2.1 kg/sq cm. Although there was no significant differences observed in grain quality traits between DSR- and TPR-planted samples, better grain quality was noted for samples planted using the direct seeded method, except for chalky grain. The results suggest that grain quality evaluation can just be conducted in direct-seeded rice entries.
