The second season trial showed the consistent effectiveness of MERA 71% SG @ 1.8-3.6 kg/ha in providing broad spectrum weed control in pre-plant hybrid corn based on 1 and 3 WAHA [weeks after herbicide application] evaluation. MERA 71% SG and Round Up 480 SL were both found effective against grasses and sedge than broadleaves at 1 WAHA. MERA 71% SG (3.6 kg/ha and 1.8 kg/ha) showed enhanced and better broadleaf control than Round Up 480 SL at 1 and 3 WAHA evaluation. Due to faster regrowth potential of Rottboellia cochinchinensis and Ipomoea triloba beyond 3 WAHA in this study, hybrid corn yield suffered even with herbicide treatments due to the above weeds competitive abilities. Results showed that in pre plant herbicide application and especially using hybrid corn, a follow-up cultural weed management approach such as interrow cultivation (10-40 DAP) to contain weed aggressiveness such as R. cochinchinensis in particular is recommended. Integrated weed management plus the herbicide component such as the use of MERA 71% SG (1.8 kg-3.6 kg/ha) or Round Up 480 SL at 3.0 L/ha is recommended beyond 3 WAHA for quality and better yields in both wet and dry season plantings.
