Characterization and semi-quantitative estimation of bioactive terpenoids from the leaves of Ligustrum japonicum

The study is a contribution to the preparative isolation of known triteprenoids from the leaves of Ligustrum japonicum and Olea europaea, using fast, inexpensive and environmentally friendly methods of extraction and identification of the targeted compounds. The extractions were performed using ethanol which was proved to be the best to extract the desired compounds and the extracts were then purified and characterized. The research was focused on the comparative extraction of triterpenic acids from the L. japonicum and O. europaea leaves. The triterpenoids mainly examined in the project are beta-sitosterol, beta-amyrin, uvaol, eryhtrodiol, oleanolic, ursolic, betulinic and maslinic acid. The crude ethanolic extracts obtained were then fractionated on column chromatography and characterized by GC-MS and HPLC-MS-ESI+. The results showed that the target compounds were all present in the L. japonicum and Olea europaea leaf extracts obtained throughout the study. Although the separation and identification of some of them is considered challenging due to the similarity in their structure, all of these acids were detectable and identified in the L. japonicum and O. europaea leaves by using both chromatographic techniques. Differences in the yield and composition in individual terpenoids between the two plant materials is discussed. The extractions were to a large extent adequate with the aim of the study regarding the speed of the extraction, its cost and its non-polluting effect.
