Effect of organic fertilizers on growth, yield and quality of tomatoes in Bara-Sudan

The Study was conducted in Bara locality of North Kordofan state, for two consecutive winter seasons (2009/2010). The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of different types of organic fertilizers on soil chemical and physical properties, and on growth, yield and quality of tomatoes fruits. The experiment consisted of five treatments, compost, fresh cattle manure, fresh chicken manure, 70% cattle plus 30% chicken manure and untreated control. Composts were prepared through aerobic fermentation method. Fixed 10 tons / ha of each organic fertilizer were added to the field. Tomatoes variety, (Bet086) was used. The treatments were laid in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Soil analysis showed that the experimental area is laminated by sandy soil texture. Tomato seeds were planted in the nursery and then transplanted into the field after five weeks. Plant height\\cm, number of branches, root length \\cm, fresh and dry weight of shoot and roots, days to 50% flowering, quality of tomatoes fruits and yield were recorded. Soil samples were taken at the start and in the end of the experiments from depths of 0-20 and 20-40 cm. Results of soil samples analysis showed significant (P 0.05) change in the soil chemical and physical properties and increase in the amount of organic matter content especially, when adding compost compared with the control. The production indicators showed that the tomatoes Agronomic parameters were significantly (P 0.05), affected by the addition of different sources of organic fertilizers. Increased in tomato productivity between different treatments compared with the control were as follows: compost 112%, cattle manure 42%, chicken manure 64%, chicken plus cattle manure 84%
