Study on the effect of different planting ratio on the forage yield in mixed cropping of Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrium) and Barley (Hordeum vulgare) in paddy fields

In order to compare the forage yield and to determine the best planting ratio in mixed cropping of Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrium) and Barley (Hordeum vulgare), an experiment based on the complete randomized block design with seven treatments and three replications was conducted in paddy fields of Rice Research Institute of Iran (Rasht) during 2010-2012 for two years. Experimental treatments were: planting pure Berseem clover and Barley, and planting mixtures of Berseem clover and Barley with ratios of: 80% + 20%, 60% + 40%, 50% + 50%, 40% + 60% and 20% + 80%. Seed rates for Berseem clover (Karaj production variety) and Barley (Productive variety) were 40 and 170 kg.ha-1 respectively. During the growth period, some traits such as germination date, plant height, plant density, leaf weight of dry forage, leaf to stem ratio and yields of wet and dry forages were studied. The results of combined analysis of variance showed significant differences between the experimental treatments in most traits. Mean comparison showed that planting ratio of 40% Berseem clover + 60% Barley had maximum wet and dry forage yields with averages of 34222 and 6425.7 kg.ha-1, respectively. The lowest dry forage yield was obtained from pure Berseem clover with average of 7709 kg.ha-1. Pure Berseem clover with average of 127 plant per square meter had minimum plant density. The highest leaf weight of dry forage was observed for 40% Berseem clover + 60% Barley with average of 4751 kg.ha-1. For all the treatments, land equivalent ratio (LER) was greater than one. Planting ratio of 40% Berseem clover + 60% Barley with LER values of 1.23 and 1.39 for wet and dry forage yields had relative advantage and is recommended for planting in paddy fields of Guilan area.
