Evaluation of lentil genotypes for drought tolerance

In order to evaluate drought resistance of 15 genotypes of lentil an experiment was conducted as complete block design with 3 replication in dryland and irrigated condition in Dryland Research Station of North Khorasan in 2001-2002 growing season. Analyze of data accomplish as complete block design for each experiment and then as combine analysis. There was not significant difference in height, empty pods, day to maturity, leaf Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Relative Water Content (RWC), but there was significant difference in number of fill pods, number of seed per plant, 100 seed weight and seed yield between genotypes. In this research drought resistance of lentil genotypes, was studied by methods of. Fisher and Mourrer, Fernandes, Cell Membrane Stability, Relative Water Content. Except of Fernandes Stress Tolerance Index (STI), the other indices did not show a close relationship with yield. So that many of high yielding genotypes according to this index were not drought tolerant. Since, in Fisher and Mourrer Stress Susceptibility Index, the yield difference between two location is important, so we can suggest that this is not a suitable method to selection of drought resistant genotypes, while Stress Tolerance Index was better than other index. All of genotypes that had high yield (genotypes 2,3,7, 10 and 12), also had high STI. Therefore in condition of this experiment, STI was better than other indices for selection of drought resistance genotypes.
