In today's society as one of the most frequently applied methods of punishment of serious infringements are punish by imprisonment. There are a lot of reasons, why imprisonment is not always the most appropriate form of punishment. Firstly, prisons and prisoners are kept on the societies tax payers money, secondly, in prisons individuals are isolated from society, for a specified period of time by placing individuals in an environment where they are in close contact with other offenders and in the society adopted rules is no longer apply. In addition, sometimes, when prison sentence ends, individual has accepted the rules in prison and are no longer able to participate in society. This is the reason, why alternatives for prison are being searched. One of them is forced labour. The aim of the paper: to find out, what are the expectations from forced labour introduction in Latvia and how real situation looks like? Research questions: 1. How does labour work as punishment express? 2. Why was introduced forced labour as punishment in Latvia? 3. Are expectations made in reality - is forced labour effective punishment? 4. Can forced labour be an alternative for prison? There are three groups of respondents interviewed in the paper - experts who are involved in realization and control of forced labour, and convicted persons with forced labour. The sample was selected by the principle of availability, making it possible to answer the questions every representatives of target groups who wanted it. Hypothesis: 1. In reality forced labour as punishment comply with expectations. 2. Forced labour is alternative punishment to prison.
