The given book tells us how the given concept on forest developed. Initially the forest typology described individual forest types with no concrete measurement data given. In the course of time the number of forest types and their descriptions changed depending on the prevailing opinions among forestry experts. Step by step the forest science assimilated an understanding that the regularities governing forest with the tree stand as the major producer of organic matter resembled a cybernetic system. Definition of forest as an ecosystem served as the cornerstone for developing a novel method of forest classification. The major goal was to incorporate in practical forestry the knowledge on forest ecology so as to enable forest management following the nature's ways.
