Overview on research and development of ethno-medicine in China

Use of traditional medicine by Chinese people has been in vogue for thousands of years. Today traditional medicine is relied upon by a major part of country`s population for their primary healthcare needs. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ethno-medicine are two important elements of traditional medicines in China. In the last half century, great progress has been made in science and technology and there has been rapid development in socio-economics which has positive influenced on the future role of traditional medicines in China. Integration and mutual complementary of traditional medicinal system and modern medicine is the unique medical system of China in the world. The new development approach of traditional medicine is to produce modern standard new medicines on the basis of traditional medicine with modern technology and science while the function and efficacy of traditional medicine remains unchanged, which is seen as a rigorous challenge to the new approach. This paper presents and discusses on the principles and methods of ethno-medicine research; highlighted research advances of ethno-medicine in China, and new-drug deevelopment based on traditional ethno-medicines; furthermore presenting some thoughts and suggestions on research of ethno-medicine, and new-drug development from ethno-medicine, emphasized that new-drug development of ethno-medicine should not be replacement of traditional medicine but inheritance and new development of traditional medicine. Finally suggests that systematic, investigation, documentation and maintaining of traditional medicines are the priorities for ethno-medicine studies in China.
