Preliminary identification of a parasite isolated from the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), collected in Cauayan, Isabela [Philippines]

Parasitic nematode-like organisms (NLO) were consistently isolated in two consecutive years from the field-collected Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), from Cauayan, Isabela. The NLOs were observed to emerge through the mouth, anus, and spiracles of the infected ACB larvae. After NLO emergence ACB bodies shrunk that immediately led to larval death. Local literature search revealed that these NLOs were not listed as ACB parasites. In an attempt to identify these NLOs, molecular biological technique was employed. Ten NLOs were lyophilized prior to DNA isolation. Based on the 18S rDNA sequence, the NLOs are classified under the family Mermithidae, with highest identity with Ovomermis sinensis. This is the first report, in the country, on the identity of NLOs attacking ACB.
