The relationship between point value of body condition score, live weight and backfat thickness in dairy cows of Czech Fleckvieh breed

The aim of this work was to compare the relationship between point value of body conditionm score (BCS), live weight (LW) and backfat thickness (BFT) in dairy cows of Czech Fleckvieh breed. Data collection in two replications was realised with a month interval, resulting in total of 109 records. Animals were weighted during milking using automatic scale of milking robot Lely Astronaut (LW = 648 +/- 7,9 kg), BCS point values were estimated by two independent evaluators and subsequently averaged (BSC = 2,96 +/- 0,03), BFT values were measured using ultrasonography (BFT = 31,6 +/- 0,5 mm). Correlation calculated between BCS and LW values (LW = 363 + 96 x BCS; r= 0,36) was lower in comparison to correlation between BCS and BFT (BFT = -2,6 + 11,6 x BCS; r = 0,69). Mentioned correlations gave lower strenght of relationship in comparison to published values for Holstein breed. In the case of cattle with dual purpose BFT values objectively determined using ultrasonography seems as more accurate and effective parameters for evaluation of actual energy bilance within the management of dairy cows breeding.
