To date, despite the limited information about the role of birds in N. caninum infection, there are no reports regarding the role of broiler chickens. Three experimental infections with Neospora caninum NC-1 isolate were conducted. In the first study (in 70 embryonated eggs from Lohman broiler chickens), six groups were inoculated with different dilutions (10, 102, 103, 104, 105, and 106) of tachyzoites/ embryonated egg and the 7th group was considered as control. The mortality rates, gross and histopathologic changes of tissues were studied. The second experiment was similar to the first one but the both broilers and leghorn embryonated eggs were infected and maintained in the same condition. In the first experiment, the mortality rate and pathologic lesions was dose dependent in broiler chicken embryonated eggs and the LD50 was 102.3. Results of the second experiment showed that the mortality rate was not dose dependent in egg- laying embryonated eggs in contrast to the broiler chickens. In conclusion, broiler chicken embryonated egg was an appropriate animal model for experimental infections due to low LD50. Clinical signs (more neurologic sign and no arthritis in egg- laying chickens) and mortality rate between broiler chicken and egg- laying were different, so genetic susceptibility was revealed in chickens for the first time.
