Edamame, also called vegetable soybean is an important vegetable in world. Beans are harvested before fully maturity when bean pods are green and just started coloured to yellow colour. Edamame has a long history. Vegetable soybean has high nutritional and medicinal value. In Latvia, in the 1st part of 20th century Pēteris Dindonis was working on soya breeding and introduction. Nonetheless in nowadays soya has not been very popular in Latvia because it is assumed that it is short-day plant, demanding high temperatures. In commercial areas soya grown only in a couple of farms, sometimes in home gardens. Preliminary investigations with the aim to clarify edamame growing possibilities in Latvia were carried out in Pūre Horticultural Research Centre Ltd. in 2015. Five Japanese cultivars were tested. Fresh pod yield was ranged between 1.3–5.2 t haE-1, higher yield was obtained for ‘Mizon Giant’.
