The ability of water status self-regulation has been investigated in Zea mays L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L. plants with different morphological strategy adaptation to drought in greenhouse and field experiments. It has been proven experimentally that adaptation of Z. mays L. and Ph. vulgaris L. plants to drought is determined by one of the alternative strategies of water status regulation - hydraulic conductivity maintenance/increase or stomatal closure. The advantage of the first mechanism found in corn plants is to maintain the stomatal conductance and photosynthesis, and, consequently, productivity. The risk of dehydration reduces in the second case, typical of bean plants but this reduction is accompanied by a dramatic reduction of crop yields. The low resistance potential of these plants is due to inhibition of physiological processes at higher water potential in the cells and critical stomata closure. Corn plants are able to maintain the activity of the physiological processes at a lower water potential, which proves the tolerance of protoplasm to hydration level reduction.
