Adaption and dissemination of newly developed improved white corn varieties as alternative source of staple food

Participatory varietal selection (PVS) of 15 improved open-pollinated white 'flint' corn varieties was conducted on-farm to test their performance compared with farmers' variety and to facilitate adoption during wet season(WS) 2011, dry season (DS) 2011-2012, WS 2012, and DS 2012-13 in selected municipalities in Isabela, Quezon, Bohol and North Cotabato provinces. Of the 15 varieties evaluated by farmers by physical inspection, Bioseed, IPB Var8, and IES8910 were highly preferred in the WS, while Northland White, IPB Var8, and Bioseed were the most preferred varieties during the DS. The traits essential to the farmers included resistance to pests and diseases, plant height, ear size and weight, grain quality, and good root anchorage. In addition to PVS preference analysis, sensory evaluation was also conducted to solicit farmers' opinion on cooking and eating quality. Northland and the farmers' local varieties particularly Takuro in Quezon and Katorsa in Bohol, were consistently favored because of their taste, color, aroma, milling size, and softness. In Isabela, IES 8910, IPB Var6 and IES8912 were the three most favored varieties. This process of selecting the most preferred varieties involving farmers facilitate varietal improvement, adoption, and dissemination. The three highest-yielding varieties after four seasons of evaluation in farmers' fields were Bioseed (4.5 t/ha), IPB Var6 and IPB Var 8(4.1 t/ha), with Bioseed also exhibiting ability to performance. For the roll-over seed system scheme, a total of 985 farmers were recipients of registered seeds during DS 2011-12 to DS 2012-2013 seed distribution.
